WELCOME to the Urban Yoga Den! Thanks for dropping by.
How are you?  No seriously, I mean it – how ARE you?  Have you asked yourself that lately?  This holiday season…heck, this entire year has brought some pretty serious global, local and personal events to our eyes, to our minds to our hearts and souls.  I know.  I know what’s been happening with you.  So, in the midst of the holiday rush, are you taking time to take care?  Inhale one long, full, deep breath right now and see what comes up.  Again, I ask – HOW ARE YOU?  Take stock.  Look back, look ahead…then take some time in the space between.  The here and now of your being.  Be nurtured.  Be held.  Be rejuvenated.  Tap into your heart’s calling, your intentions, your purpose.  Be supported.  Be empowered.  Be changed.  And then go on out and change the world (perhaps simply by authentically living your changes).  Our December class focus is Intention & Purpose – I hope to practice with you soon! OM Shanti.

NEW YEAR’S YOGA ALL OVER THE PLACE
Every year I teach a Sankalpa Vinyasa practice for New Year’s Eve
.  It started as a small gathering at my home – 8 friends who no longer wanted to partake in the mindless debauchery of our past NYEs laid ourselves out on the floor, under the tables and on the couch in my tiny little studio apartment and practiced Yoga Nidra, Pranayama, Meditation and Kirtan.  It was a relieving and empowering experience for all of us.  That night, I made a vow to annually offer a mindful NYE option, to be of service to those who feel they need that alternative, to make it accessible for all practice levels and to make it affordable for all pockets.  I am thrilled to see that over the years, more and more studios have begun offering a mindful New Year’s Eve practice.  Below are some of your options for ringing in 2013 in a healthy way; please choose what makes sense for you.  Ihope to see you – or hear about your experience – on your mat ‘round midnight this December 31st!

WELCOME to the Urban Yoga Den! Thanks for dropping by.

Over the past 20 years, yoga has changed me. This journey of cultivating a constructive way of living has guided me through many styles and teachers, many stops and starts, and many hard-learned lessons. When I first started practicing in 1993, the transformation felt quick and intense. My insides were uprooted and exposed. I started to see myself clearly. My stubborn, self-reliant nature had landed me in the vice-grip of substance addiction. Long-term change was necessary, or I would die. Thankfully, yoga gradually dissolved those destructive patterns; and after my 1st 10 years of practice I became flexible, willing and teachable. Still addicted, however, I reached an all-time low in 2002 – and I surrendered. I finally reached out for help. I am deeply grateful to share that next Monday, October 22nd, I will observe 10 years of sobriety – and 10 years of complementing yoga’s foundational design for living with a recovery program that addresses the cunning, baffling and powerful disease of addiction. Our October class focus is Change – how has yoga changed you? See you soon! OM Shanti.

A NOTE ABOUT ADVANCED REGISTRATION FOR EVENTS
Please consider registering for events in advance. This tells me how many handout packets I need to Xerox, and how many students to prepare for in general. Advanced registration can also keep studios from canceling events due to low interest. Thank you! OM OM OM…

– TEACHING SCHEDULE

WELCOME (back) to the Urban Yoga Den! It’s been a little while. Thanks for dropping by!

My first job after yoga teacher training was to design and instruct a yoga program for at-risk kids at an inner-city Charter School. The program included an incentive called the “Karma Yogi Club,” giving recognition to students who were witnessed taking mindful action during the day. Explaining the incentive, I asked the kids if they knew the definition of “Karma.” One girl answered, “Bad Karma means that if I do something bad, I’m gonna get hit by a bus.” “Eek, no!” I exclaimed, and then explained a kid-friendly definition. “Karma is action, and, the result of that action. For example, if I do positive, healthy, kind and loving things, there is more positive, healthy, kind and loving energy in the world. And we will feel it. If I do annoying, harmful and destructive things, that energy will fill the world. And we will feel it. So a Karma Yogi purposefully chooses to do ‘good’ things – not only to spread the good energy, but also to enjoy it!” Y’know, this definition suffices for my adult expectations, as well. Our August class focus is Karma & Karma Yoga – hope to practice with you soon! OM Shanti.

NEW YEAR’S EVE & MORE!

Hello from DC’s Urban Yoga Den! Thanks for staying tuned.
In this edition:

– WELCOME

– NEW YEAR’S EVE AT QUIET MIND

– WINTER EVENTS ALL AROUND

– NEW URBAN YOGA DEN BLOGS

– A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS

– CLASS SCHEDULE (SUBBING LOTS!)

Welcome to the Urban Yoga Den! Thanks for dropping by.

Our December class focus is Abundance. Many of us tend to spend this month formulating New Year’s Resolutions. Yogis call them “intentions;” but the fact is, we’re still thinking a lot about what we want to have, what we want to do and how we want to be. We set goals and make plans. And we can completely ignore life’s natural transitions and forget to be present in the process. What would happen if something came along to upset our plans? What if we discover our goals are not realistic? What if we break our New Year’s resolution? How will we respond, if we’ve had our eyes, minds and hearts glued to the end result? So rather than thinking of Abundance as what we can get, let’s focus on the journey of getting there. Let’s lengthen our breath even more, enjoy the transitions between our Asana, grow into a pose. And in that spaciousness, let’s rest knowing that we can adjust our resolutions, change our plans, set new intentions. Can we make abundant room to welcome whatever abundantly arises?

This month, come to class, see what comes up, then join us for “Sankalpa Vinyasa” on New Year’s Eve. Details below. Hope to see you soon!

– THE HAPPY HEART PROJECT: Under the new moon of Sunday, August 28, I launched “The Happy Heart Project: 100 Days Toward Joy” – a daily journey away from an annoyingly encroaching emotional darkness and toward the hopeful light of happiness.  From 8/28 through 12/5, I will wake up, burn a stick of “Happy Heart” incense and set an intention to grow toward joy.  Each day I will post a “Happy Heart Project” status on Facebook and periodically post an Urban Yoga Den blog.  I’m on day 65, the light is returning, and I’ve written three blogs!  https://urbanyogaden.wordpress.com/

Hello…

Remember the last Update, just two weeks ago?  “Lately I have been feeling a strong tug to change everything,” I wrote.  I promised to share those changes with you as they unfold.  So here goes…

SPECIAL EVENTS
– Leaving Past Tense: In July 2009, Past Tense Yoga Studio opened its doors and invited me to join their team of teachers.  What an amazing two years.  I am grateful to the teachers, staff, students and community who have forced me to grow in so many ways.  My last class at Past Tense will be Wednesday, 8/24.  I hope to see you at my final classes, which will wrap up our Eight Limbs focus and celebrate these two special years!  Although I will still guide my three morning classes at Trinity (see schedule below), I will be taking an end-of-summer break from other teaching, then looking for opportunities that feel right.  I will also be offering some Fall workshops (see below).  So I’m leaving Past Tense, but not going far!  See you on the mat, at the FarMar, and ’round the ‘hood!
– FREE Weekly Meditation, Sun., 7:45-8:15am: My last session at Past Tense will be 8/21.  Are you interested in continuing our early Sunday practice?  If so, please let me know, and we’ll meet at “The Urban Yoga Den” (my MtP/Adams Morgan apartment) – you’ll still be able to make the 8:30am Asana class at the studio!
– Kirtan, Fri., 8/19, 7:30-9pm: I will be playing percussion and chanting with Andrea Creel (chant leader/harmonium), Christy Freer (chants/percussion) and Angela Blueskies (chants/flute) aka “The Shaktis.”  Kirtan is uplifting, responsive singing and a form of Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion and love).  Olney Yoga in Maryland.  (http://www.olneyyoga.com/)
– Yoga Play Date, Sat., 8/20, 4:30-6:30pm: My final Play Date at Past Tense!  This special class includes yoga stations for kids 5 & up!  Drop off the little ones for two hours of movement, art, storytelling and games.  Past Tense Studio in Mt. Pleasant.  (http://pasttensestudio.com/)
– Fall Workshops!:  As typically offered, I intend to guide my “Meditation Myth Busters,” “Meditative Autumn Hike” and “Diwali Celebration” this Fall, and “Chill Time for Karma Yogis” in the Winter.  Watch this space for details and please let me know your interest!

– Meditation for Busy People – Corporate Zendo guru Jeff Munn will offer this workshop at Simon Says Yoga in Bethesda, MD from 2-4 on Saturday, September 17.  He’ll focus on one- or two-minute practices for spare moments in the work day, and show how meditation helps workers become more calm, present, and effective. Beginners and experienced students will feel welcome and discover useful practices.  http://corporatezendo.blogspot.com/2011/08/my-upcoming-workshop-on-september-17.html
– Epic Yoga Studio Opening! – Keep your eyes peeled for a new studio south of Dupont Circle.  Emma Saal, one of the most lovely people on earth, will be opening Epic Yoga in September.  I’ve seen the space – it’s filled with natural light, will have lockers and showers, and offers three yoga rooms.  http://epicyogadc.com/

YOGA UPDATE – MONDAY, 1 AUGUST, 2011 – CHANGE, KIRTAN, BLOGS AND MORE!

Hello from DC’s Urban Yoga Den!  Thanks for staying tuned.

In this edition:
– HELLO
– NEW TEACHING SCHEDULE & SPECIAL EVENTS
– LATEST BLOGS
– OTHER RESOURCES & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Hello…

Lately I have been feeling a strong tug to change everything.  Everything.  Big and small.  Inside and out.  In the past month alone, notable events forced me to reevaluate my behaviors, activities and needs, and to reignite my practices, beliefs and vision.

Since reaching my 46th birthday last Thursday, I’m enjoying increased clarity about what I truly have, want and need.  I aim to take action based on that clarity.  And I look forward to sharing the changes with you as they unfold.

TEACHING SCHEDULE & SPECIAL EVENTS
– Moving On: I have felt honored to teach at DC’s oldest yoga center, St. Mark’s Yoga.  However, due to the stressful rush hour commute from Mt. Pleasant to Capitol Hill, I will not continue with the Wed., 6pm slot.  Thanks to Caitlin V. for subbing while I was teaching summer camp!  I hope to see the SMYC community for special events!
– Monthly Class Focus: In August we will wrap up our exploration of yoga’s Eight Limbs with a focus on Dharana (single-pointed focus or concentration), Dhyana (meditation) and Samadhi (“enlightenment” or sustainable peace).
– FREE Weekly Meditation, Sun., 7:45-8:15am: I offer a FREE guided or silent (alternating weekly) meditation each Sunday morning.  Past Tense Studio in Mt. Pleasant.  (http://pasttensestudio.com/)
– Kirtan, Fri., 8/19, 7:30-9pm: I will be playing percussion and chanting with Andrea Creel (chant leader/harmonium) and Angela Blueskies (chants/flute) aka “The Shaktis” for a Kirtan.  This practice of uplifting, responsive singing is a form of Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of devotion and love).  Olney Yoga in Maryland.  (http://www.olneyyoga.com/)
– Yoga Play Date, Sat., 8/20, 4:30-6:30pm: This special class includes yoga stations for kids 5 & up!  Drop off the little ones for two hours of movement, art, storytelling and games.  Past Tense Studio in Mt. Pleasant.  (http://pasttensestudio.com/)
